How to make friends
April 25th, 2006
I went to the Dallas Library yesterday hoping to find some newish issues of Business Week. The newest they had was 3 weeks old, so I picked up a couple books instead.
Anyway, when I went up to checkout, the 20-something, hispanic guy at the desk asked the origin of my name. I told him it was Italian and he said it would look good on the back of a soccer jersey. I told him there was a famous soccer player named Omar Sivori who used to play for Juventus. He thought for a sec and said, “Juve?” obviously familiar with the team. Anyway, the point is, the guy showed me how easy it was to make friends. You just start asking someone questions about themselves. If you seem to be genuinely interested they’ll open right up.
